Millbrae Profile The City of Millbrae is a small, primarily residential community located near the San Francisco International Airport. Although only three square miles, it is a full-service city providing its businesses and residents with top quality services. Millbrae is in the heart of San Mateo County along the San Francisco Peninsula. Major freeways border both its eastern and western boundaries, making Millbrae easily accessible from all parts of the Bay Area. Many hillside homes enjoy beautiful bay views. Well-cared for neighborhoods, twelve local parks and the Green Hills Country Club add to the charm of the residential community. Millbrae’s business community is a wonderful mix of retail, shopping, restaurants, hotels and service businesses. Several development projects in the city have brought an exciting group of new businesses to Millbrae. Those businesses complement those that have been established in Millbrae for many years. Millbrae has a small-town atmosphere that is unique for a community located in an urban setting. Millbrae operates as a General Law City, providing for a Council/Manager form of government that clearly distinguishes the legislative power of the City Council from the administrative powers of the City Manager. The City Council and City Treasurer are the only officials elected directly by the residents of Millbrae. The Council appoints the City Manager and City Attorney, as well as the members of the City’s committees and commissions. 
Recreation in Millbrae Millbrae is a wonderful community for recreation. The city has a total of 12 parks, a world-class Recreation Department, and a wide variety of sports facilities. There are youth leagues for soccer, baseball, softball and basketball. Millbrae is also the home of MY Skate Park, which was originally operated by the YMCA but is now a city-run park for skateboarders of any age. Millbrae also has a tremendous number of recreation opportunities for seniors including exercise, cards, travel and art programs. Millbrae also has private tennis, golf, and swim clubs. Millbrae Recreation Department The department serves a vital role in building community spirit and pride to enhance the lives of Millbrae residents. The Department promotes active and passive leisure experiences, wellness and fitness programs, enrichment classes, and special events. An activity guide is mailed to all residents and businesses three times a year, and can also be accessed on the city’s web site. Online registration is available for most programs. The Recreation Department could not accomplish what it does without the generous support of the business community, service clubs, and volunteers. Together we make Millbrae a true community. San Mateo County Profile San Mateo County is located between San Francisco and Santa Clara counties with the San Francisco Bay to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The County covers 531 square miles and boasts 54-miles of spectacular coastline bluffs and beaches, with 74 percent of its land in agricultural use, watershed, open space, wetlands or parks. San Mateo County was formed from parts of Santa Cruz County in 1856. San Mateo County is home to approximately 700,000 residents. Median family income is approximately $80,000. The county is ethnically diverse with Hispanic and Asian persons comprising over 20 percent each of the total population. Mild climate, abundant natural resources, picturesque landscape of oak-tree dotted rolling green foothills, creeks and majestic stands of old redwoods best describes San Mateo County, making it one of the most attractive communities in California. San Mateo County encompasses a variety of habitats including estuarine, marine, oak woodland, redwood forest, coastal scrub and oak savannah. There are numerous species of San Francisco Bay estuarine shoreline, San Bruno Mountain, Fitzgerald Marine Reserve and the forests on the Montara Mountain block. The county is home to several endangered species including the San Francisco garter snake and the San Bruno elfin butterfly, both of which are endemic to San Mateo County. The endangered California clapper rail is also found on the shores of San Francisco Bay, in the cities of Belmont and San Mateo.
